Producer Profile: Bache Gabrielsen

Thomas, the first Bache-Gabrielsen, decided to move to the Cognac region at the age of 21 in 1903, and his legacy has been carried on by a long family lineage ever since. After purchasing the Dupuy Cognac house in 1905, Thomas decided to bottle his proprietary Cognac under his own name. The tradition has been passed down from father to son, and today, Thomas’ great grandson, Herve, is at the helm.

Herve is known for bringing an innovative flare to a tradition laden world. Eleanor Lamy, the Managing Director of the company describes the brand as “passionate about bringing innovation to Cognac whilst remaining faithful to tradition and our bi-cultural origins.” The bi-cultural element is in reference to their forward thinking approach and willingness to experiment, best exemplified by their relatively new American Oak Cognac, finished in new Tennessee oak barrels.

“We want to continue to innovate whilst remaining faithful to our rich history and the values that have been established over the last four generations and which I am sure will continue well into the future” proclaims Lamy. The way they stay rooted in tradition is by maintaining meticulous control over the quality of their line of products. One of the most important ways to ensure consistent quality is through their long standing partnerships in the region, Lamy explains: “We have formed [close relationships] with a selection of winegrowers from 4 of the finest cognac growing areas...these relationships ensure a transparency and continuity in the quality of our Cognacs.”

It is their long family history that enables them to branch out. Staying rooted in tradition while reaching out into the world of trends and tastes that are motivating an ever changing sea of drinkers, they are able to cultivate products that have a wide appeal. Their three cognacs entered in the 2017 Ultimate Spirits Challenge all received high scores, including the Bache-Gabrielsen XO Cognac which was a finalist with 95 Points.
