Spirits Trend: Swapping Out Whiskey In A Manhattan

The Manhattan is an iconic classic cocktail that any good bartender worth their salt has mastered. Playing with the proportions of whiskey, vermouth, and bitters depending on the specific brands is one way to create a unique and balanced drink. Getting creative with the garnish, using  a house brandied cherry for example, is another way to put your own spin on the drink. With the growing number of bold and pungent spirits that mirror the intensity of whiskey, it’s also become common to substitute in other spirits for a novel twist. Aged expressions of rum and tequila are favorites among those whose go to is bourbon, offering a different core flavor with many of the same sweet wood inflected under and overtones that pair so easily with red vermouth and Angostura bitters. The gentle smoke and overall intensity of mezcal has made it a popular stand in for those who generally opt for a spicy rye whiskey. Changing the base spirit also opens the door to more creative garnishes and flavored bitters. The small changes add up to an infinitely creative menu of new ways to enjoy an old favorite.
