Ultimate Challenge

Wine Score: Portuguese Great Value Reds

Of the 15 wines scoring 90 and above in 2018’s Ultimate Wine Challenge, 13 of them also received a Great Value award for their high score to low price ratio. Portuguese wine is coming into its own in international markets based on overall high quality, and the value is an added bonus. The values across the board for red wines makes it easier for new customers to try and fall in love with native grapes and the bold, rich style of wine. These 13 wines stand out as shining examples of what to expect from this growing category. This includes the Chairman’s Trophy for Portuguese Red, Quinta da Alorna Reserva Touriga Nacional & Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Tejo, with 95 Points and a price tag of just $15.

This is a wine that has cured meats and an almost “dry-aged” quality to the nose. This carries over to the palate making a lively, medium-bodied wine perfect for pastas and charcuterie. Drink now or hold for 3-5 years.
